In a world where adventure and travel have become a way of life for many, it’s easy to overlook the often invisible hands that make these journeys possible. In this enlightening episode, we delve into a thought-provoking conversation with Marinel De Jesus, a remarkable individual who has dedicated the latter years of her life to advocating for the human rights of porters and mountain expedition workers. Founder of the influential media platform Brown Gal Trekker and the trailblazing mountain trekking enterprise Equity Global Treks, Marinel is on a mission to reshape the outdoor and travel industries to be more inclusive, equitable, and respectful of the communities that sustain them.
Elevating the Status of Women and Indigenous Communities:
At the heart of Marinel’s endeavours lies a commitment to elevate the status and roles of women and indigenous communities within the outdoor and travel sectors. A former civil rights lawyer, Marinel’s transition to a full-time social entrepreneur, solutions-focused journalist, activist, and speaker was fueled by her passion for hiking and her unwavering belief in the power of transformation through conscious travel. Through Brown Gal Trekker and Equity Global Treks, she is fostering a movement that prioritises not only the thrill of adventure but also the dignity and rights of those who contribute to the industry’s foundation.
Unveiling the Reality: Human Rights Violations and Gender Inequity:
During our conversation, Marinel sheds light on the harsh realities faced by porters and mountain expedition workers. From the rugged terrains of Peru and Nepal to the majestic landscapes of Pakistan and Tanzania, these unsung heroes often confront grievous human rights violations. We explore the systemic challenges that perpetuate gender inequity within the trekking industry, discussing the urgent need for transformation and reform. Marinel’s insights unveil a stark truth – the very landscapes that inspire wanderlust are often marred by social injustices.
Female Leadership and Decolonising Industries:
Marinel’s journey isn’t just a battle against injustice; it’s a movement to decolonise the tourism and outdoor sectors. We delve into the profound impact of female leadership in dismantling established power dynamics and reshaping narratives. Through her work with The Porter Voice Collective and initiatives like the KM82 documentary, Marinel is rewriting history by amplifying the voices of those who have long been marginalised. We explore the ripple effects of her efforts and the potential to transform the future of these industries.

The Great Himalayan Trail Campaign: Supporting Women in Trekking:
Marinel’s advocacy is taking her and her team to Nepal. The Great Himalayan Trail (GHT) Women Leaders on the Trail Campaign (GHT Women Leaders campaign) is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to elevate the roles and status of female Nepali guides and porters in Nepal. The campaign involves organising a group of female Nepali guides and porters to trek on the Great Himalayan Trail for 140 days beginning February until July of 2024. This campaign is in support of the mission of The Porter Voice Collective, which aims to advocate for the human rights of porters in Peru, Nepal & Tanzania via all forms of media and storytelling.
