Sustainable Tourism in Kenya with One Horizon

One Horizon gives travellers the opportunity to positively affect the lives of Kenyan communities through their sustainable tourism programs, whilst giving us a window into the beauty of the East African culture.

Not only are One Horizon a tourism organisation, but a humanitarian one as well. Providing sustainable development to many of their partnering communities throughout Kenya.

Take one of their tours and you’re not only going to get a glimpse of the Big-Five, although this renowned experience is certainly on the cards. What you’ll be provided with is the opportunity for complete cultural immersion with the Kenyan people, and the chance to provide assistance to some of Kenya’s most vulnerable.

A popular day tour on offer is titled “Go Granny Go!”, an amazing opportunity for travellers to meet an inspiring grandma and help end her long life of poverty when you give her a piglet or 25 chicks to help her start her own farm.

Kenya is one of the most impoverished countries in sub-saharan Africa, with 42% of its population of 44 million living below the poverty line. Opportunities like this can have an immense impact on a person and their immediate family or community.

On this impactful tour you can expect to visit a local farmers market, safari through the magnificent countryside witnessing sights of ageing women wielding hoes in vegetable fields, horse-drawn carts and goat herds. Then, experience the true highlight of the tour, which is a deep and personal interaction with the grandma and her local community, as your two worlds collide and you exchange gifts. Her gift will be the tools to grow a small business, and yours will be the hospitality bestowed upon you by the welcoming community, as well as a memory that will last a lifetime.

This is just one of the many impactful experiences that One Horizon provides. Their one day tours also include the chance to visit a soup kitchen for toddlers, a visit to a women’s empowerment centre, and a visit to the One Horizon school where they have given education access to over 2000 children. One Horizon also maintain a strict children’s protection policy to ensure the safety of all children who are part of their humanitarian projects.

If you have more time to spare in Kenya, One Horizon also offer in depth safaris for up to 13 days. These tours incorporate both people and wildlife, while also providing sustainable development to local communities. Venture deep into the Masai Mara for a chance to spot giraffe, wildebeest, zebras, lions, leopards, jackals and buffalo. Visit Lake Nakuru National Park and see the flocks of flamingos that frolic on the waters of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. Immerse yourself in a women’s vocational and lifestyle training program and learn about the lives of the women it is helping. The range of activities is enough to feed your wanderlust and your heart as you connect with both nature and its people.

To date, One Horizon have helped 115 women gain access to vocational training, provided daily food for over 2000 children and supported the creation of over 120 farms in the region. This could not be possible without the help of their guests.
