A respectful distance is the most critical pillar of wildlife viewing. By staying away, you ensure the animal can continue its routine uninterrupted. If it changes its behavior, you may be too close. For example, it could stop eating, resting or feeding its young. Then, it may become visibly agitated and see you as a threat. 

The proper distance depends on the animal and the terrain. Parks typically require staying at least 25 yards away from most creatures. However, the gap increases to 100 yards for dangerous predators, such as bears and wolves.  Err on the side of caution and remain farther than the minimum. 

2. Use Binoculars

It’s natural to want to be close to wildlife, especially if it means getting a good picture. However, it’s essential to maintain responsible wildlife watching practices and keep your distance. That means using binoculars to bridge the gap between getting a detailed viewing experience and giving animals the space they need. 

Using binoculars may be more advantageous than sitting up close and personal. With these optical instruments, you can detect subtle patterns on feathers and the textures of horns. Clear field markings become easier to identify, thus making your experience even more rewarding. 

3. Speak Quietly

Besides distance, you should also be aware of your volume. Wild animals constantly scan for danger, so hearing your voice could indicate a predator is nearby. Refrain from sudden movements and loud noises, as they signal danger. You’d be surprised at how well a conversation cuts through natural sounds. 

You can also be mindful by speaking in a low tone. Whispering is less distinct and jarring. Some animals are sensitive to high-frequency sounds and may detect you from far away. For example, owls can hear frequencies of 5,000 Hz and higher. 

4. Wear Neutral Colors

Animals are also sensitive to color, so wearing neutral tones is an underrated rule of responsible wildlife watching. Your goal should be to look as inconspicuous as possible. That’s why you see park rangers wearing khaki and olive green — these shades visually blend into the background. 

Birdwatchers must be careful about their outfit choices. Experts say birds can detect bright colors and UV light, so bold shirts and pants stand out. Instead, wear garments with earthy tones to appear more natural. A wise wardrobe can reduce your threat level and keep animals in the area for longer. 

5. Refrain From Feeding
